Migraines and chocolate – does chocolate cause migraines?

Migreeni ja suklaa – aiheuttaako suklaa migreeniä?

Chocolate is often blamed for causing migraines. I know of one Italian study where migraine sufferers were asked to eat chocolate on certain days and their migraines the next day were monitored. The study found that chocolate does not cause migraines.

Why do many people find that chocolate triggers migraines?

This is related to the migraine precursors, which can occur up to two days before the pain phase. An increased appetite, and especially a craving for sweets, can be the first symptoms of a migraine. In retrospect, it may seem as if eating chocolate caused the migraine, when in reality the migraine caused the desire to eat chocolate.

What does chocolate contain?

Chocolate contains small amounts of caffeine and theobromine, which has similar but milder effects to caffeine. Some people may experience poor sleep after eating chocolate, and sleep disturbances may predispose them to migraines.

Should you avoid chocolate?

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate (over 70% cocoa), has several proven positive health benefits when consumed in moderation. The most notable benefits are related to cardiovascular health, antioxidant effects, and mood enhancement.

The flavonoids in dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, improve blood vessel function, and reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which protects the heart and blood vessels.
Additionally, chocolate contains tryptophan and phenylethylamine, which promote the formation of serotonin and can improve mood.

Summary

Eating chocolate is good for your health, as long as it doesn't trigger migraines, according to your own observations. However, milk chocolate is not the best option – dark chocolate is a better choice.
